Fascinate comes from the Latin word for "evil spell," and originally meant "bewitched" or "spellbound" in the literal, more sinister sense. The word eventually took on the less evil, more metaphorical meanings "to command the attention of" or "to captivate."

[merriam-webster]

fascinate (v.)

1590s, "bewitch, enchant," from French fasciner (14c.), from Latin fascinatus, past participle of fascinare "bewitch, enchant, fascinate," from fascinus "a charm, enchantment, spell, witchcraft," which is of uncertain origin. Earliest used of witches and of serpents, who were said to be able to cast a spell by a look that rendered one unable to move or resist. Sense of "delight, attract and hold the attention of" is first recorded 1815.

To fascinate is to bring under a spell, as by the power of the eye; to enchant and to charm are to bring under a spell by some more subtle and mysterious power. This difference in the literal affects also the figurative senses. [Century Dictionary]

Possibly from Greek baskanos "slander, envy, malice," later "witchcraft, sorcerery," with form influenced by Latin fari "speak" (see fame (n.)), but others say the resemblance of the Latin and Greek words is accidental. The Greek word might be from a Thracian equivalent of Greek phaskein "to say;" compare enchant, and German besprechen "to charm," from sprechen "to speak." Watkins suggests the Latin word is perhaps from PIE *bhasko- "band, bundle" via a connecting sense of "amulet in the form of a phallus" (compare Latin fascinum "human penis; artificial phallus; dildo"). felon (n.)

c. 1300, "one who deceives or commits treason; one who is wicked or evil; evil-doer," used of Lucifer and Herod, from Old French felon "evil-doer, scoundrel, traitor, rebel, oath-breaker, the Devil" (9c.), from Medieval Latin fellonem (nominative fello) "evil-doer," which is of uncertain origin, perhaps from Frankish *fillo*filljo "person who whips or beats, scourger" (source of Old High German fillen "to whip"); or from Latin fel "gall, poison," on the notion of "one full of bitterness." Celtic origins also have been proposed.

Another theory (advanced by Professor R. Atkinson of Dublin) traces it to Latin fellare "to suck" (see fecund), which had an obscene secondary meaning in classical Latin (well-known to readers of Martial and Catullus), which would make felon etymologically a "cock-sucker." OED inclines toward the "gall" explanation, but finds Atkinson's "most plausible" of the others.

'Odysseus' was 'Hero', Mythologic -and 'Trickster'

human invention of writers ...the forms change but the story remains the same...

no sympathy asked for-non given

'Succubus'   is a   dream figure [negative anima] that 'assumes' female form- to have sexual intercourse with an emotionally weak male.

Usually 'experienced' by Ascetics/Monks and well documented by Jungian Therapists such as Marie-Loise Von Franz [who wrote at length about masturbation in Monks]

it's not difficult to see the link to 'Bunny' the 'Sucker'...

'Incubi' and 'Succubi' are different gender forms of the same 'entity' and in Freudian

literature   linked to Schizophrenia [Hypnogogia I have covered elsewhere in this blog]

'Lilith' 'Naamah' or 'Gilgamesh' and so on are the result of

[see Wikipedia] male-ego infidelity complexes

One of the earliest evident mentions of a demon sharing qualities to an incubus comes from Mesopotamia on the Sumerian King Listcirca 2400 BC, where the hero Gilgamesh's father is listed as Lilu.[4]

Lilu is described as "disturbing" and "seducing" women in their sleep, while Lilitu, a female demon, is described as appearing to men in erotic dreams.[5]

Two other corresponding demons appear as well: Ardat lili, who visits men by night and begets ghostly children from them, and Idlu lili, a male counterpart to Ardat lili who visits women by night and begets from them.

Ardat lili is derived from ardatu, the word for "a woman of marriagable age", while idlu lili is derived from idlu, meaning a "grown man".[6][7] These demons were originally storm demons but eventually became regarded as night demons potentially due to mistaken etymology.[8]

The half-human offspring of such a union is sometimes referred to as a cambion. An incubus may pursue sexual relations with a woman to father a child, as in the legend of Merlin.[9]

In the Malleus Maleficarum, exorcism is presented one of the five ways to overcome the attacks of incubi. The others are Sacramental Confession, the Sign of the Cross (or recital of the Angelic Salutation), moving the afflicted to another location, and by excommunication of the attacking entity, "which is perhaps the same as exorcism".[10]

In contrast, the Franciscan friar Ludovico Maria Sinistrari stated that incubi "do not obey exorcists, have no dread of exorcisms, show no reverence for holy things, at the approach of which they are not in the least overawed".[11]

One scientific explanation for the incubus concept could fall under the scope of sleep paralysis, as well as hypnagogia, as it is common to experience auditory and visual hallucinations in both states.

Typical examples include a feeling of being crushed or suffocated, electric "tingles" or "vibrations", imagined speech and other noises, the imagined presence of a visible or invisible entity, and sometimes intense emotions of fear or euphoria and orgasmic feelings.

These often appear quite real and vivid, especially auditory hallucinations of music, which can be quite loud, indistinguishable from music being played in the same room.

Humanoid and animal figures, often shadowy or blurry, are often present in hypnagogic hallucinations, more so than other hallucinogenic states.

The combination of sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucination could cause someone to believe that a "demon was holding them down".

Nocturnal arousal etc. could be explained by creatures causing otherwise guilt-producing behavior.

Add to this the common phenomena of nocturnal arousal and nocturnal emission, and all the elements required to believe in an incubus are present.[12]

Additionally, some crimes of sexual assault were likely passed off as the actions of incubi.

Some authors speculate that rapists may have attributed the rapes of sleeping men and women to demons to escape punishment.

Robert Masello asserts that a friend or relative is at the top of the list in such cases and would be kept secret by the intervention of "spirits"
