Chino [Loki the Fish]

Actor Lee Marvin [former USMC] in a 'Promo' pic for the Movie 'The Wild One' [1953]-playing 'CHINO'

Marvin was quite a shrewd Operator- He is the only Actor I know who has actually selected His own DIRECTOR when making a Movie- 'POINT BLANK'[ 1967] The DIRECTOR -JOHN BOORMAN.

review: "What makes Point Blank so extraordinary, however, is not its departures from genre conventions, but Boorman's virtuoso use of such unconventional avant-garde stylistics to saturate the proceedings with a classical noir mood of existential torpor and romanticized fatalism."

Themes

Viewers and critics have often questioned whether or not the film is really a dream that Walker has after he is shot in the beginning. The film's director John Boorman claims to not have an opinion on the matter.

"What it is, is what you see", responded Boorman. While filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has described Point Blank as "memory film" for Marvin.

Boorman believes the film is about Lee Marvin's brutalizing experiences in World War II, which dehumanized him and left him desperately searching for his humanity.[6]

Critic David Thomson has written that the character of Walker is actually dead throughout the entire movie and the events of the film are a dream of the accumulating stages of revenge.[19]

Others have also considered this concept; Brynn White has questioned whether or not Walker is a mortal or a ghost, "a vaporous embodiment of bitter vengeance barely clinging to Boorman's variegated frames" and Boorman has commented: "He could just as easily be a ghost or a shadow".[20]

Some critics consider Point Blank, "a haunted, dream-like film that draws upon the spatial and temporal experiments of modernist European art cinema", especially the "time-fractured" films of French director Alain Resnais.

Lee Marvin-

"Sam [Peckinpah] was dangerous for me. He had my number and I had his, and that can be bad between an actor and a director. 'Cause he was a little guy." -- Lee Marvin, born 100 years ago today: February 19, 1924.
In fact, the professional relationship between Marvin and Peckinpah was limited to two television episodes (for ROUTE 66 and THE DICK POWELL THEATER, the latter being an adaptation of an episode of THE WESTERNER) and some attempts at film collaborations that never went anywhere.

Therefore, we are left with one of the great "What might have been" scenarios as we consider the works in which they nearly collaborated -- including Marvin as Pike in THE WILD BUNCH (which he turned down for PAINT YOUR WAGON and because he deemed it too close to THE PROFESSIONALS), Sam Potts in MAJOR DUNDEE (which went to James Coburn), Sheriff Cottonmouth in CONVOY (Ernest Borgnine was eventually cast), and THE EMPEROR OF THE NORTH, a passion project for Sam that he was never able to make but eventually starred Marvin and Ernest Borgnine under the direction of Robert Aldrich.
That being said, what a remarkable cinematic legacy Marvin continues to leave behind -- as title villain in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962), Charlie Strom in THE KILLERS (1964), both gunfighter Kid Shelleen and criminal Tim Strawn in a dual role in CAT BALLOU (1965; when he won his Oscar for the dual role, he quipped, "I think one-half of this belongs to some horse somewhere in the Valley"), Rico Fardan in THE PROFESSIONALS (1966), Major John Reisman in THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967), Ben Rumson in PAINT YOUR WAGON (1969), Walker in POINT BLANK (1967), and the Sergeant in THE BIG RED ONE (1980). These are but a sample of great performances from Marvin, a former marine who fought and was wounded in Saipan before he came to Hollywood and forged his career as some of the most iconic hardboiled "tough guy" characters.
Regarding his remarkable career, Marvin once stated,
"Fear is possibly the greatest motivation there is. But, as I said before, by pretending not to fear, you can make it work for you and get the job done. Every actor is full of doubts about himself, and I'm no exception. If you see those fears in yourself-- and expose them -- the audience can associate with you more deeply than if you try to play it safe and pretend to be the invincible tough guy. To show my strength is nothing; to show my weakness is everything. I suppose it takes a certain kind of strength to admit your fears, but I really don't think it's anything more than simple honesty." He passed August 29, 1987, aged 63.

I SUPPOSE ACTING IS NOT UNLIKE PSYCHOLOGY IN MANY RESPECTS...BUT CHINO IS ALSO A  'COWBOY' MOVIE..DIRECTED BY STURGES? [SOUNDS A BIT LIKE 'STURGIS' IN MONTANA?] WILD HORSES ...

'HELL IN THE PACIFIC' MOVIE [1968]...HAS LEE MARVIN PISSING ON THE HEAD OF A JAPANESE NAVY GUY..

Lee Marvin portrays an American pilot who, along with a marooned Japanese navy captain (played by Toshirô Mifune), finds themselves stranded on a small uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean during World War II.

PISSING IN MOVIES HAS BEEN AROUND A LONG LONG TIME DUDE....IT'S A 'MY DICK[GUN] IS BIGGER THAN YOURS'..MALE EGO PROJECTION THING [IMHO]

IN SOME WAYS IT ILLUSTRATES THE ABSURDITY OF IDEOLOGY 'CONFLICTS' BECOMING MANI-FEST. JAPANESE -AMERICANS AND GERMAN-AMERICANS WERE ILLEGALLY INTERRED DURING WW2 ? ON WHAT AUTHORITY? THE FBI's? I THINK MOST PEOPLE HAVE AN IDEA ABOUT  J.EDGAR HOOVER BUT NOT TOO MANY WILL KNOW HE WAS A 33rd DEGREE 'FREEMASON' AS WELL AS A TRANSVESTITE..

LEE MARVIN WAS NO 'RAGS TO RICHES' ACTOR-HE CAME FROM A VERY WEALTHY PRIVILEGED BACKGROUND....BUT INTERESTINGLY WAS EXPELLED FROM BOARDING SCHOOL -BEFORE ENLISTING IN THE USMC.

[SEE;https://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/lee-marvin-7433.php]

He was sent to several boarding schools, and was expelled from many of them for misbehavior.
In 1942, he dropped out of a prep school in Florida and got enlisted in the Marines before WWII. He was commissioned in the South Pacific and was involved in the assault on Mount Tapochau in which most of his unit was killed. He got injured below his spine and nearly lost his life on Saipan. He earned a Purple Heart for his bravery. After this incident he was medically discharged from the military ranked ‘Private First Class’.
Then he moved back to Woodstock where he got employment with a local plumber. When he was doing repairs at the Maverick Theater, he was asked to step into a role of an ailing actor. Marvin made a lot out of this opportunity and never turned his head back.
He made is stage debut with a small part in ‘Billy Budd’.[!]

I NEVER KNEW HE WAS AN ALCOHOLIC? [AND PACIFIST AGAINST THE VIETNAM 'WAR']...

'BING CROSBY' WHO RECORDED WITH DAVID BOWIE WAS ALSO AN ALCOHOLIC...[AND HAD TWO SONS WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE].....LEE MARVIN CHOSE TO BE BURIED IN ARLINGTON CEMETERY IN WASHINGTON DC  WITH A SIMPLE EPITHET

PVT. USMC.

HIS QUOTE; 'I'M NO WAR HERO, I'M JUST A GUY WHO GOT SHOT IN THE ASS'  RESONATES

NEEDLESS TO SAY-HE HAD A DRINK PROBLEM [DEPENDENCY] TOO..ARLINGTON IS ALSO THE NAME OF A UNIVERSITY IN TEXAS. DUDE.

William Shakespeare famously wrote in his play Othello:

‘Not poppy, nor mandragore,

Nor all the drowsy syrups of the world,

Shall ever medicine thee to that sweet sleep,

Which thou ow’dst yesterday.’

The term 'laudanum was first coined in the 16th century by the Italian botanist Paracelsus, who called his own pill-like laudanum preparation ‘the stone of immortality’

I've covered a lot of what I perceive to be Movie 'influencers' Oscar winning etc such as 'MARTY' [1956] with Ernest BORGNINE in My 'INTRODUCTION' Post.

Burgess Meredith was born in 1907. He was a stage actor who made many movies in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and his most memorable of these was as George in Of Mice and Men, and as Ernie Pyle in The Story of G.I. Joe. He was caught up in the McCarthy blacklist, and turned to television, where he had four very memorable appearances on The Twilight Zone, and later as The Penguin on the 1960s Batman TV show. Some of his other movie roles include: Rocky (as Mickey), Grumpy Old Men, and Clash of the Titans[PIC eMoviePoster.com]

Addendum 14 Aug 2024

The 'Wild One' Motorcycle Movie from 1953 [Director -STANLEY KRAMER] was banned here in the UK for many years by Censors who refused to give it a Certificate for Public Showing.

Marlon Brando and the Coen Brothers Movies have a History- They are reported as 'mimicking' Brando during Production of 'Lebowski' -They even considered Him for the part of 'Dude'-and of course Brando was famous as a Theatre Method-Actor in Productions such as 'Streetcar named Desire' [as Kowalski]

'The Motorcyclists' [Movie 2023] with Tom Hardy etc has many references to 'OUTLAW' Groups of individuals associated with Motorcycles -most of which were 'offshoots' from the Original Law Abiding Clubs of enthusiasts.

Hardy's Character has dialogue concerning the 'Wild One' which He says was the 'inspiration' for starting up His Club.[THE VANDALS]
'Wild One' as an 'iconic' influence on American Youth is undeniable-yet Brando was 29 when He played the part  of 'Johnny' and Marvin was also 29...playing 'Chino'.
Ralph 'Sonny' Barger one of the founders of the 'Hells Angels Motorcycle Club' wrote in His Autobiography that 'Johnny' was a lesser influence to Him -He was more inclined to think 'Chino'
represented what He saw as non-conformity. [Apparently the original 'HELLS ANGELS' were WW2Vets who rode ex Army Harleys and took Their Name from either the 1930's Aviation Movie-or others depicting 'Flying Tigers' etc although the actual History is much debated as to who exactly came up with the idea of changing the 'Pissed off Bastards' Motorcycle Club to 'Hells Angels']
Some famous Members such as 'Hunter S Thompson' the Pederast became associated with 'Psychedelia'
through illicit LSD etc usage.

In modern day USA there are dozens of Motorcycle Clubs of all Ethnicity- the 'Iconic' Bikes in the USA are HARLEY-DAVIDSON and INDIAN...[HARLEYS HAVE NICKNAMES FATBOYS or H.OG's or 'FARMBOYS'  'ELECTRAS' 'PAN-AMERICA' or even 'RANGER'] and INDIAN MOTORCYCLES?

According to Ralph "Sonny" Barger, founder of the Oakland charter in 1957, other early charters of the club were founded in Gardena, and elsewhere, with the members usually unaware that there were other clubs. One of the lesser-known clubs was in North Chino/South Pomona in the late 1960s. Barger has been credited with helping to unify these various disparate charters under common club bylaws.[32][33][34]

Other sources claim that the San Francisco Hells Angels were organized in 1953 by Rocky Graves, a Hells Angel member from San Bernardino ("Berdoo"), implying that the "Frisco" Hells Angels were very much aware of their forebears.[35] The "Frisco" Hells Angels were reorganized in 1955 with 13 charter members, Frank Sadilek serving as president, and the smaller, original logo. The Oakland charter, at the time headed by Barger, used a larger version of the "Death's Head" patch nicknamed the "Barger Larger", which was first used in 1959. It later became the club standard.[36] The first charter to open outside California was established in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1961.[20]

The Hells Angels are often depicted in semi-mythical romantic fashion like the 19th-century James–Younger Gang: free-spirited, iconic, bound by brotherhood and loyalty. At other times, such as in the 1966 Roger Corman film The Wild Angels, they are depicted as violent and nihilistic, little more than a violent criminal gang and a scourge on society.[37]

The club became prominent within, and established its notoriety as part of, the 1960s counterculture movement in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury District, playing a part at many of the movement's seminal events.

Members were directly connected to many of the counterculture's primary leaders, such as Ken Kesey and the Merry PrankstersAllen GinsbergJerry Garcia and the Grateful DeadTimothy LearyThe BeatlesThe Rolling StonesMick Farren, and Tom Wolfe.

"Gonzo" journalist Hunter S. Thompson's book about the club launched his career. From 1968 to 1969 the Hells Angels of San Francisco headquarters was at 715 Ashbury (across from the Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury)[wikipedia]

A Nazi adaptation of the play was Hans Steinhoff's 1937 film Ein Volksfeind.

This classic play was adapted by Arthur Miller in the 1950s in a production that opened at the Broadhurst Theater on December 28, 1950. It starred Academy Award winner Fredric March and his wife Florence Eldridge as well as Morris Carnovsky; future Oscar winner Rod Steiger was a "townsperson." Miller's adaptation was presented on National Educational Television in 1966, in a production starring James Daly

It was also made into a movie of the same name in 1978, starring Steve McQueen

this Play is banned in China ..[see rest of article on Wikipedia]
