WHO KNEW?

Returning to the start of the Movie....We remember Actor Sam ELLIOTT'S Dialogue...

Probably unbeknown to Sam - He was 'recalling' some of  His previous works..

'Across the Sands of Time' 'Westwards with the Wagons ' etc.. are lines of Dialogue from previous TV Shows and Movies.

Sam is famous for that Nietzsche- type Moustache.

PHILOSOPHY

'The Flies' is a Play by Sartre- so which Fly is Sam re-presenting? a Sand Fly? or is He just
a 'DrugStore Cowboy'?

Again these are valid Hypotheses- but We must look deeper- Sam is wearing a Leather Vest so
a link to other Leather Jackets -the 'Nihilists' could tentatively be made.

A Leather Jacket is a type of Fly Larvae- a Crane Fly. MOTORCYCLE Enthusiasts wear Leather Jackets and 'Nihilism' or 'Realism' [ITS ALTERNATIVE MEANING]
features prominently'

Sam wears His 'White Hat' indicative of a 'Good Guy' in Cowboy Movies- drinks Sarsaparilla etc
from 'SIOUX CITY'
then quotes Nietzsche 'indirectly' 'Sometimes You eat the Bar' etc being 'Sometimes You look into the Abyss' [in My opinion because 'Bar' is Street for Heroin- also German for Money , and 'BEAR' with an 'umlaut' which adds two small dots over the 'A']

Sam is what European Viewers would associate with the 'Marlboro Man' Stereotype- and TEXAS.

but TEXAS is famous for more than Cattle.. OIL and RATTLESNAKES and many Flies also find a Home in the

LONE STAR STATE...

BLOOD-SUCKERS?

[The Dialogue is taken from the 1956, Terribly, Terribly Bad Movie-' It Conquered the World'
...starring Lee Van Cleef, Peter Graves and Beverly Garland..]
